alert because of what could come today with icy conditions. >> on the attack, we're just days away from a south carolina republican primary and the candidates are ramping up their attacks on national television. and not giving up. we'll tell you what volunteers in new castle county will be doing this morning as they continue to look for a missing airman. 5:31, 17 degrees. i'm tracy davidson. welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this presidents' day. >> i'm vai sikahema. let's get started with meteorologist bill henley and our first alert forecast. >> tomorrow we'll see heavy rain. it will be a two-day event. it's starting off with accumulating snowfall. we've seen a dusting in parts of delaware and south jersey. this is not the biggest threat. it's going to be light snowfall during the day. i'm expecting an inch or two in philadelphia before it changes over to rain. unfortunately the ground will still be icy, so we could see icing as this rain comes down and freezes up, especially north

and west. that's the greatest threat. tomorrow, the threat of flooding. low-lying areas could see flooding tomorrow as we will get heavy rain out of it. it's cold enough this morning that we're tracking light snow. the steadiest snow is in central and southern delaware. there's more on the way, very light snow in cape may. we've soon a dusting on beach avenue so far this morning. temperatures still very cold, not as cold as yesterday but not warm either. 15 degrees for trenton, mt. holly, 18 now in philadelphia and wilmington. we will wind up above freezing this afternoon. so in spite of the clouds and the snow, a major warmup starts this morning. 23 degrees at 10:00. by lunch time, that's when we'll be heading into theç steadier snowfall. though it will still be light at 1:00 this afternoon and 29 degrees. the threat of icing for this evening. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour to show you where

that will most likely occur. back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> we are doing a quick check on new jersey roads, the 42 freeway around 41 in deptford. northbound lanes in here. that's what's headed toward the philadelphia area. the drive time doing okay from 55, average speeds way up there still in the 60s above 65 miles per hour. everything is still moving along. if you are going to keep it going north in new jersey, head to princeton, maybe, watch out in princeton township. we have a major road closure in here. route 206 is closed in both directions from mountain avenue to princeton avenue. they have a detour in place. you can follow that and you'll be just fine. because it's presidents' day, septa is running on a weekday holiday schedule. no delays or problems for either. d.a.r.t., new jersey transit and amtrak are running on time with no delays also. 5:33. this morning, road crews are not getting a break for presidents' day. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in

lansdowne, delaware county. they're also treating the roads ahead of what's going to happen today, right? >> reporter: that's right, tracy. we are talking with some of the folks who are going to be going out and trying to salt these roads, make sure that people don't slip and slide when they go out there. i've been checking in with penndot. you can see the plow truck tractor on the website. most of them are in the harrisburg area right now, allentown as well. as the day goes on an we get closer to getting more of that snow and ice falling, that could certainly change. we could see more of the vehicles out on the roadways here. you see brine, the salt crews were spreading salt throughout this wawa parking lot in lansdowne, right along lansdowne avenue. everything is dry right now. once the snow falls and we get the change over toç sleet, freezing rain and that will stick to the surface and forms

forecast for your specific neighborhood. just about 5:36 and 17 degrees in philadelphia. volunteers will gather in a few hours to search for a missing delaware airman. senior airman keifer huhman was last seen on super bowl sunday. didn't report for duty on dover air force base on monday and state police found his truck on a bridge over the chesapeake in delaware canal. volunteers today will search along the sides of the delaware canal at nearby st. george's bridge in new castle county. fire and icy temperatures just don't mix. here's the proof. philadelphia firefighters in frankford doused this smoldering auto body shop with water yesterday. the water quickly turned to ice. in north philadelphia, another sign of how hard it is for firefighters to work in this bitter cold. they had ice on their coats. look at that. they poured salt on the grounded to make sure they didn't slip. dealing with fires in weatherç

like this is a real challenge. >> most difficult part is us just trying to stretch hose lines. obviously icing immediately. we're trying to move into a house, the steps freeze right away, our footing is compromised. >> everyone made it out of that home safely. new from overnight, a carjacking suspect is under arrest after leading philadelphia police on a chase overnight. it started when a 47-year-old man was attacked and his car stolen. it ended in a crash at 6th street and fisher avenue in the olney neighborhood. the carjacking victim is okay. in decision 201, less than a week to go until the south carolina republican primary. it targets front-runner donald trump over funding planned parenthood. >> planned parenthood treats the unborp like another form of currency and yet some politicians still defend them.

>> planned parenthood serves a good function. >> the ad slams planned parenthood and donald trump's comments that the organization provides necessary services other than abortion guidance. the ad ends by saying, quote, donald trump is just plain wrong. cruz made the same charge against trump during saturday night's republican debate and trump fired back, questioning cruz's honesty. >> he supports federal taxpayer funding for planned parenthood. i disagree with him on that. that's a matter of principle. >> you are the single biggest liar you probably are worse than jeb bush. >> senator cruz has repeatedly called for ending federal funding for planned parenthood. meanwhile on the democratic side, both candidates are campaigning in nevada ahead of next week's caucusings. in las vegas last night, vermont senator bernie sanders criticized raencriticize

mercer museum in doylestown. learn about the favorite foods of america's first president, even help make and try george washington's favorite breakfast, that's fried corn meal. that's this afternoon. another cold start this morning, temperatures in the teens right now. we're watching for? snow, light snow falling in parts of the area. it will be accumulating during the day but the temperature will be rising. only going to see a light snowfall in the area. we've seen a few snowflakes farther to the north but the steadiest snow right now is saying to the south. eventually it moves into philadelphia, trenton, montgomery and bucks counties. during the late afternoon and evening hours, we could see even warmer air coming in which could create a different problem. noontime today, light snow.

by late this afternoon rain pushes into the area. the atmosphere will be warming up. unfortunately the ground could could create icing. freezing rain threats for late this afternoon in new jersey and north and west it's snow this afternoon at 1:00. the temperatures will stay below freezing at 6:00 and below freezing as this rain moves in. this, again, is a freezing rain threat into the evening hours. that's rain coming down and freezes up making for slippery conditions and could be power outages if we see isolation on power loans. during the day, snow will be light, 1 to 3 inches for allentown and reading, quakertown be up to 29 degrees. trenton, a very light snowfall. 31 in 29 in doylestown, 33 for mott holl mt. holly. vineland 33 degrees, and 40s in

rehoboth. a slow climb for philadelphia this afternoon. snow accumulating during the day. light snow here, 1 to 2 inches is possible. seven-day forecast and a look at tomorrow which will bring a different threat 0 oto our area that's when i'm back in ten minutes. government workers not working today, also kids are not in school. we expect lighter traffic. >> let's see what's happening on the roads with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> you will expect a lighter of a morning rush at least for a lot of children being off school, a lot of people being off work. we'll keep our fingers crossed for that. right now we're doing okay. on the schuylkill expressway, around route 202, no problems in either direction. eastbound lanes in here. if you're heading towards center city, it will be okay. eastbound to the blue route, 13-minute trip. more drive times when i come back in the next ten minutes.

here's a live look right now at the nbc 10 first alert weather radar. it's already showing in parts of delaware and south jersey as we track winter storm in our area today. light snow falling in some of those places. one of the biggest issues we'll deal with today, icy conditions. that's why we have issued a first alert until tomorrow. where we could see flooding in parts of the region. and breaking news out of delaware county. fire crews are at a condo complex on yale avenue in swarthmore. we're being told the fire is under control. we have a crew on the way and will bring you updates as soon as we get them. one philadelphia neighborhood is beginning a new era this week without a local bakery that had been an institution for decades.

gieger's bakery is officially out of business. the family own german bakery served up custom cakes along with danish, strudel and pies for nearly 40 years. >> it's like why, why, why? because it's such a staple in this commune. it's like, wow, where do we go now? >> geiger's is theç latest los for the community. nearby mayfair bakery also closed recently. a scare for some skiers in new hampshire. look at these pictures. they got stuck 40 geet off the ground in subzero temperatures. it happened just about 2:00 at cannon mountain aerial tramway in franconia. there was a service break issue. no one was hurt. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 12 minutes before 6:00.

another frigid start this morning. clouds over philadelphia. we are in the teens this morning. 18 degrees at philadelphia international. there are colder spots to be found, including in the pocono mountains which dropped down to zero first thing this morning. right now 2 degrees, they're back to making snow. but mother nature, natural snow is falling in delaware and into south jersey. already seeing a dusting in cape may. looks impressive on the radar. it's a very light snow and the first snowflakes have actually fizzled trying to come into philadelphia. it's going to take most of the morning for this snow to get going. once it does, we'll see accumulate. by 1:00 this afternoon, about an inch will be on the ground in philadelphia, dover, millville and wilmington. snow will end up being heavier by 7:00 this morning, 2 or 3 inches on the ground. warm air will be surging in with this storm system until it all changes over to rain. by tomorrow morning, we could have close to two-thirds inch of rain on the ground in

philadelphia, with the heaviest rain yet to come. noontime tomorrow, there's the heavy rainfall that will sweep through during the afternoon hours, by late tomorrow when it's moving offshore, we could see anywhere from an inch to more than 2 inches of rain which could cause flooding in low-lying areas. for today, clouds and light snow this morning. 7:00, 15 degrees. the temperatures will be climbing, even with the snow moving in. 23 degrees at 10:00. a steady snow this afternoon.ç come tomorrow, that's when we get the rain. heavy rainfall through the afternoon hours. 56 degrees tomorrow afternoon. by wednesday, we're drying out. wednesday and thursday will feature lots of sunshine. breezy on thursday. that will bring in colder air on thursday but that is not a trend. in fact, the temperatures will turn around, heading into the weekend, from the 30s thursday to the 40s friday to closer to 60 degrees saturday afternoon.

activity right around cottman avenue, so you can see those flashing lights in the center of your screen. but still if you're headed northbound or southbound by this scene, you will have no problems. you can see all traffic moving along nicely. updates on this scene and mass transit when i come back in the 6:00 hour. the irs says you may want to get your tax return done quickly. taxpayers across the country are getting letters from the irs about fraudulent returns. cnbc reports the troubles can be traced back to last year's data security breaches. millions of social security numbers ended up in the hands of i.d. thieves. thieves used the number to file a fake return and get other people's tax refund.ç >> in most cases we're hearing they're e-filing, doing this in bulk. >> more security measures are in place to detect the real return
